Which CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test Do You Need for a CSCS Card?

If you’re completing a construction-related NVQ with CADUK, you’ll need to pass the appropriate CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test before you can apply for your CSCS card.

The type of test you need depends on your occupation and the level of NVQ you’re working towards.

Below is a simple breakdown to help you identify the right test for your role.

For Supervisors – Gold CSCS Card

If you’re completing one of the following NVQs:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations

  • Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision

You’ll need to pass the ‘Specialist’ CITB Health, Safety & Environment test (also known as the Supervisors HS&E test).

Once you’ve achieved your NVQ and passed this test, you can apply for the Gold CSCS Supervisor Card.

Gold CSCS Card – Supervisor

For Managers – Black CSCS Card

If you’re completing one of the following higher-level NVQs:

  • Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management

  • Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management

  • Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Practice (construction only) 

  • Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management

  • Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Strategic Health & Safety Leadership and Management (construction only)

You’ll need to pass the Managers and Professionals CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test (known as the MAP test).

It’s important to note that the Health and Safety NVQs offered by CADUK are construction-focused. They are suitable only for health and safety professionals who work within the construction industry and are looking to apply for a Black CSCS Card (Manager).

If you work in a non-construction environment, you will not be eligible for a CSCS card through these qualifications.

Once you’ve achieved your NVQ and passed this test, you can apply for the Black CSCS Manager Card.

How to Book Your HS&E Test

You can book your CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test online through the CITB website:

The test costs £22.50 and can be taken at a CITB test centre or an approved Pearson VUE centre.

You’ll need to bring:

  • A valid form of photo ID (passport or driving licence)

  • Confirmation of your booking

After completing your NVQ and HS&E test, you can apply for your CSCS card through the official CSCS website:

You’ll need:

  • A copy of your NVQ certificate (or proof of achievement)

  • Confirmation of your HS&E test pass (within the last 2 years)

  • Payment for your CSCS card (£36 at time of writing)
