Which CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test Do You Need for a CSCS Card?
If you are completing a construction-related NVQ with CADUK, you must pass the correct CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test before you can apply for your CSCS card.
The test you need depends on your occupation and the level of NVQ you are working towards. This guide explains which HS&E test applies to Supervisors and Managers, and how it links to your Gold or Black CSCS card application.
For Supervisors – Gold CSCS Card
If you are completing one of the following NVQs:
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations
- Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision
You must pass the CITB Specialist Health, Safety & Environment Test, commonly known as the Supervisors HS&E test.
Once you have achieved your NVQ and passed this test, you can apply for the Gold CSCS Card – Supervisor.

For Managers – Black CSCS Card
If you are completing one of the following higher-level NVQs:
- Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management
- Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management
- Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Practice (construction only)
- Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management
- Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Strategic Health & Safety Leadership and Management (construction only)
You must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Managers and Professionals, commonly known as the MAP test.
The Health and Safety NVQs delivered by CADUK are construction-focused. They are suitable only for professionals working within the construction industry who intend to apply for a Black CSCS Card – Manager.
If you work outside construction, these qualifications will not make you eligible for a CSCS card.
Once you have achieved your NVQ and passed the MAP test, you can apply for the Black CSCS Manager card.

How to Book Your HS&E Test
You can book your CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test online through the official CITB website:
The test currently costs £22.50 and can be taken at a CITB test centre or an approved Pearson VUE centre.
You will need:
- A valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
- Your booking confirmation

- Your NVQ certificate or proof of achievement
- Confirmation of your HS&E test pass (within the last two years)
- Payment for your CSCS card (currently £36)
