The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision is designed for experienced construction supervisors, foremen and gangers who are already managing work on site and want to gain the Gold CSCS Supervisor Card.

This is a work-based qualification, meaning everything is based on what you already do in your job. There are no exams, no classroom sessions and no written assignments.

At CADUK, we specialise in a fast-track, discussion-based assessment designed specifically for experienced supervisors. If you are confident talking about your role and responsibilities, the NVQ can often be completed in as little as 2–4 weeks without taking time off work.

Many other providers require written coursework, long written answers or site visits. Our approach is different. We assess your competence through structured professional discussions, supported by simple site evidence such as photos, short videos and documents you already use.

This makes the process quicker, more practical and far more achievable for working supervisors.

To get started, simply click the “Book Your NVQ Now” button and complete the short application form. This is completely free and non-committal. One of our assessors will then give you a quick call to confirm the NVQ is suitable for your role and experience, and answer any questions you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

This NVQ is based on the real responsibilities of a working supervisor on site.

Typical duties include:

• Briefing teams and allocating work
• Making sure work is carried out safely and in line with RAMS
• Monitoring quality and progress
• Coordinating trades and activities
• Checking materials, tools and equipment
• Reporting progress to site management

Your assessment will be based around these types of real tasks.

The qualification is based on CITB occupational standards and reflects the day-to-day role of a supervisor.

It covers:

• Planning and organising work activities
• Managing and communicating with teams
• Interpreting drawings, specifications and RAMS
• Maintaining health, safety and welfare on site
• Monitoring progress against programme
• Ensuring work meets required standards

You will complete a minimum of 8 units, including 6 mandatory units and 2 optional units.

This qualification is suitable for:

  • Site supervisors
  • Foremen
  • Gangers
  • Working supervisors managing teams on site

You must already be working in a supervisory role and have experience in your trade.

Your assessment is based entirely on your normal job. There are no classroom sessions and no written coursework.

At CADUK, we use a structured, discussion-based approach that is designed for experienced supervisors.

You will complete the NVQ through:

• Professional discussions with your assessor via Zoom
• Short videos such as a quick site walkaround or briefing your gang
• Photos showing work activities, inspections or completed tasks
• Site documents such as RAMS, permits, diaries or allocation sheets
• Witness testimony from a site manager or senior colleague

Your assessor will guide you step by step and tell you exactly what to upload. Everything is flexible and built around your work.

All evidence comes from your normal day-to-day work. Nothing is staged or simulated.

Typical evidence includes:

• Photos and short videos of site activities
• Site documents such as RAMS, permits, diaries or checklists
• Records of briefings or toolbox talks
• Witness testimony from a manager or senior colleague

Your assessor will help you choose the right evidence and explain exactly what is needed.

During the professional discussion, your assessor will ask simple, practical questions based on your day-to-day role as a supervisor.

You are not expected to give textbook answers. You just need to explain what you actually do on site.

Examples include:

How do you make sure your team understands the work for the day?
You might explain how you brief your gang, allocate tasks and go through safety requirements.

What do you do if someone is not working safely?
You might describe how you stop the job, correct the issue and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

How do you check the quality of work?
You might talk about inspections, checking against drawings or spotting issues early.

How do you manage materials and equipment on site?
You might explain how you plan ahead and make sure everything is available for your team.

What do you do if there is a problem affecting your work area?
You might describe how you assess the situation, communicate with others and find a solution.

Your assessor will guide the discussion and help you explain your answers clearly. Everything is based on your real experience.

The Level 3 NVQ Occupational Work Supervision is made up of 6 mandatory units and 2 optional units.

These units are based on your real responsibilities as a supervisor on site.

In simple terms, you will be assessed on your ability to:

• Plan and organise daily work activities
• Supervise and communicate with your team
• Understand and follow RAMS, drawings and specifications
• Maintain health, safety and welfare on site
• Coordinate work and manage different trades
• Monitor progress and keep work on schedule
• Ensure work meets quality standards

Depending on your role, you may also cover areas such as:

• Managing plant, equipment or materials
• Supporting team performance
• Checking measurements and levels

Your assessor will guide you through each unit, but everything is based on what you already do in your job.

Most candidates complete the NVQ in 2–4 weeks.

This depends on:

• Your experience
• How quickly you can provide evidence
• Your availability for discussions

You will have up to 12 months to complete if needed, but most supervisors finish much sooner.

This NVQ can be completed quickly because it is based on your existing competence.

If you are already doing the job and can clearly explain your responsibilities, there is no need for lengthy written answers or unnecessary evidence.

Unlike many providers, we do not require:

• Written assignments
• Long written answers
• Classroom attendance
• Site visits

Instead, we assess your knowledge and competence through professional discussion.

This allows experienced supervisors to complete much faster, often within 2–4 weeks.

Yes. Completing this NVQ allows you to apply for the Gold CSCS Supervisor Card.

This card proves your competence as a supervisor and is required for many supervisory roles in construction.

If you are not currently working and do not hold a valid CSCS card, you can still get started.

Once you are registered for this NVQ and have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Supervisors, you can apply for the Red Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager (TSM) CSCS Card.

This card is designed to help experienced supervisors get back on site while completing their NVQ. It shows that you are:

  • Experienced in a supervisory role
  • Approved for the NVQ
  • Registered and actively working towards it

Once you are back on site, you can gather the evidence you need to complete your NVQ and then upgrade to the Gold CSCS Supervisor Card. To qualify, you must:

  • Be registered for the Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision NVQ
  • Have at least one year of supervisory experience
  • Have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Supervisors within the last two years

The card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed.

Yes, if you are a CITB-registered employer.

This NVQ is eligible for the £600 CITB Short Qualification Grant, which is claimed by the employer after completion.

To confirm eligibility, contact CITB directly.

When you click the “Book Your NVQ Now” button, you will be taken to a short online application form.

This form gives us an overview of your job role, experience and the type of work you carry out on site. It also includes simple examples of the kind of evidence you may need, such as photos, videos or basic site documents.

Once you submit the form, one of our assessors will give you a call. This is a free, no-obligation call to make sure the NVQ is suitable for you. During this call, the assessor will:

  • Confirm your current role and responsibilities
  • Check your experience and level of supervision
  • Make sure you have access to suitable evidence
  • Answer any questions you have about the process

This step is important because NVQs are based on real competence. We only enrol candidates who are in the right role and can realistically achieve the qualification.

If the assessor confirms that the NVQ is suitable for you, you can choose to enrol and start at any time. There is no pressure to continue if you decide not to go ahead.
