The Gold CSCS Card, often referred to as the Gold Supervisor Card, is the recognised competence card for construction supervisors working in the UK. It demonstrates that the holder has the skills, experience and formal qualification required to supervise construction work and manage teams safely on site.
The most common way to obtain a Gold CSCS Card is by completing either the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision or the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision, along with passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment ‘Specialist’ Test for Supervisors. Once these requirements are met, the card can be applied for through the CSCS scheme and is normally valid for five years.
Holding a Gold CSCS Card shows employers that a supervisor has the ability to organise work, oversee teams, maintain quality standards and support safe working practices on construction projects across the UK.
Many construction companies require supervisors to hold a Gold CSCS Card as proof that they have the skills and qualifications to supervise work safely on site. The Gold CSCS Supervisor Card confirms that you have completed a recognised supervisory NVQ and understand how to organise work, lead teams and maintain health and safety standards.
Holding a Gold CSCS Card helps demonstrate professional competence, improves site access and can support career progression into higher supervisory or management roles within the construction industry.
To obtain a Gold CSCS Card, you must complete either the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision or the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision. You must also pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Supervisors (Specialist).
Once both requirements are completed, you can apply for the Gold CSCS Card directly through the CSCS website. The card confirms that you are qualified to supervise construction work and manage teams safely on site.
The most common qualification for the Gold CSCS Card is the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision. This qualification is designed for working supervisors, gangers and experienced operatives who guide trades, organise day-to-day work activities and help maintain safe and productive site operations.
Some supervisors instead complete the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision. This is a slightly higher-level qualification typically suited to site supervisors or assistant managers who oversee multiple trades, coordinate resources and support the overall delivery of construction projects.
Both qualifications can provide access to the Gold CSCS Supervisor Card. They are competence-based NVQs assessed through evidence of your real work activities on site rather than classroom study or written exams.
Candidates are allowed up to 12 months to complete the NVQ. However, because the qualification is assessed using evidence from your normal work activities, many candidates finish much sooner.
With CADUK’s fast-track discussion-based assessment, the process can move quickly once your evidence has been uploaded to the online portal. If you are able to gather and submit your site evidence promptly, it is possible to complete the NVQ in as little as two weeks.
Most candidates typically complete their NVQ within four to eight weeks while continuing to work in their normal role on site.
Evidence can include documents such as RAMS, daily activity briefings, toolbox talks, site drawings, inspection records, photos and short videos showing your work activities. Once your evidence has been reviewed, your assessor will arrange a relaxed professional discussion over Zoom to confirm your competence against the NVQ standards.
All CADUK NVQs are assessed through a flexible, discussion-based process designed for people who are already working in the construction industry. There is no written coursework, no classroom attendance and no need to take time off work.
You simply upload evidence of your normal work activities to our secure online ePortfolio. This can include documents such as RAMS, daily activity briefings, toolbox talks, site drawings, inspection records, photos and short videos from site.
Once your evidence has been reviewed, your assessor will arrange a relaxed professional discussion over Zoom to talk through the work you have submitted. This allows you to explain how you carry out your role on site and demonstrate your competence against the NVQ standards.
Because the assessment is based on your real work activities, most candidates are able to complete their NVQ while continuing in their normal job without disruption. Once the qualification is completed and you have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, you can apply for the Gold CSCS Supervisor Card.
You’ll use evidence from your normal work activities as a supervisor, foreman or ganger. The NVQ is based on the work you already do on site, so most of the evidence will come from your day-to-day responsibilities.
This might include things such as:
• a short site tour video explaining the work taking place
• a video of you delivering a toolbox talk or site briefing
• photos of work you are supervising
• site diaries, allocation sheets or daily records
• quality checks, snag lists or inspection notes
• emails, messages or other records showing how you coordinate and supervise work
Your assessor will guide you on exactly what evidence is needed and make sure everything you provide matches the requirements of the NVQ.
Traditionally, NVQs are assessed either through multiple on-site assessment visits or through online systems that require candidates to complete written assignments for many of the units. This can make the process slow and time-consuming for people who are already busy working in the construction industry.
CADUK uses a fast-track discussion-based assessment model that removes the need for written coursework. Instead of completing written assignments, candidates demonstrate their knowledge through a relaxed professional discussion with their assessor.
You simply upload evidence from your normal work activities to our secure online portal. This can include documents such as RAMS, daily activity briefings, toolbox talks, site drawings, inspection records, photos and short videos from site.
Your assessor reviews the evidence and then arranges a friendly discussion over Zoom where they ask questions about your role and how you carry out your day-to-day responsibilities on site. You answer by explaining how you perform your work and giving real examples from the projects you are involved in.
Because the assessment is based on your real work and practical experience, the process is often much quicker than traditional NVQ assessment routes. While candidates are allowed up to 12 months to complete the qualification, most people finish within 4 to 8 weeks, and some proactive candidates complete their NVQ in as little as two weeks once their evidence has been uploaded.
To apply for a Gold CSCS Card, you must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Supervisors (Specialist). This is often referred to as the Supervisor Specialist HS&E Test. It checks that supervisors understand their responsibilities for health, safety and site management. The test can be taken at any Pearson VUE test centre and the pass result is valid for two years when applying for the Gold CSCS Card.
The Gold CSCS Card is valid for five years. Before it expires, you can renew the card by passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Supervisors (Specialist) again and submitting a renewal application through the CSCS website.
Renewing the card ensures that supervisors continue to demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and safe working practices on construction sites.
The CSCS Gold Supervisor Card itself currently costs £36 when applying through the CSCS website. However, to qualify for the card you must first complete a recognised supervisory qualification such as the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision or the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision.
You must also pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Supervisors (Specialist) before submitting your application.
Once these requirements are completed, the Gold CSCS Card can be applied for directly through the CSCS website or via the My CSCS App.
