The Black CSCS Card is the recognised card for experienced construction managers. It shows that you have the right level of qualification, experience and health and safety knowledge for a management role in construction.

The Black CSCS Card, also known as the Black Manager Card, is the recognised card for people who manage construction work on site. It shows that you have the necessary experience, training and qualifications to manage and supervise activities safely on site.
To get a Black CSCS Card, you need to:
1. Complete a relevant NVQ
A Level 6 or Level 7 construction management NVQ, depending on your role.
2. Pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test
You need the Managers and Professionals test for the Black CSCS card.
3. Apply through MyCSCS App
Once you have the qualification and test pass, you can submit the card application.
Once you have those in place, you can apply online and your card will usually arrive within 3-5 working days of approval.
The Black CSCS Card is for experienced construction professionals who manage work, people, projects, safety, contracts, inspections or site operations.
It is commonly used by site managers, contracts managers, senior site inspectors, construction managers, project managers and other experienced people working at management level.

This is different to the Specialists and Operatives tests.
No. The SMSTS course is a short training course and does not qualify you for a Black CSCS Card.
The only way to access the Black CSCS card is to complete a Level 6 or Level 7 construction-based NVQ.
You have up to 12 months to complete your NVQ.

If you need a CSCS card to get back on site, you can apply for a Temporary Red CSCS Experienced Manager Card (TSM) once you are oficially registered onto the NVQ.
You will need have have passed the CITB ‘MAP’ HS&E test before you can apply for the Red TSM card

If you have already completed a Level 6 or 7 NVQ, you will only need to pass the CITB HSE Managers and Professionals (MAP) test again to renew the card.
No. CSCS Industry Accreditation cards, often called “grandfather rights” cards, expired on 31 December 2024 and cannot be renewed through that route.

Yes, certain Health and Safety qualifications can support a Black CSCS Card application if your role is based in construction. This may apply to construction H&S managers or advisers completing the Level 6 Occupational Health and Safety NVQ or the Level 7 Strategic Health and Safety Diploma. The qualification must match your actual construction-based responsibilities.
