The Gold CSCS Card is the recognised card for construction supervisors. It shows that you have the right experience, skills and qualifications to supervise work safely on site.

What is the Gold CSCS Card?

The Gold CSCS Card, also known as the Gold Supervisor Card, is the recognised card for people who supervise construction work on site. It shows that you have the necessary experience, training and qualifications to manage and supervise activities safely on site.

How do I get a Gold CSCS Card?

To get a Gold CSCS Card, you need to:

1. Complete a relevant NVQ
A Level 3 or Level 4 construction supervision, depending on your role.

2. Pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test
You need the Specialist test for the Gold CSCS card.

3. Apply through MyCSCS App
Once you have the qualification and test pass, you can submit the card application.

Once you have those in place, you can apply online and your card will usually arrive within 3-5 working days of approval.

Who is the Gold CSCS Card for?

The Gold CSCS Card is for experienced people who supervise work, organise teams, check site activity and take responsibility for safe working on construction sites.

It is commonly used by people in practical site supervision roles, as well as those moving towards broader site supervision responsibilities.

If you are responsible for supervising work on site, this is usually the right card for you.

Do I need an NVQ?

Yes. You must complete a relevant NVQ at Level 3 or Level 4 in construction.

The most common routes are the Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision or the Level 4 NVQ in Construction Site Supervision.

Do I need to pass a Health & Safety test?

Yes. You must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Specialists.

This is different to the Managers and Operatives tests.

Does the SSSTS course give me a Gold Card?

No. The SSSTS course is a short training course and does not qualify you for a Gold CSCS Card.

You still need to complete the appropriate Level 3 or Level 4 NVQ.

How long does it take?

You have up to 12 months to complete your NVQ.

Many supervisors complete much quicker through our fast-track assessment route, often in just a few weeks, depending on their experience, role and the availability of evidence.

How much does it cost?

There are three main costs involved in getting your Gold CSCS Card:

NVQ qualification: from £950 + VAT
CITB HS&E Test (Specialist): £22.50
CSCS card application: £36

Payment plans are available for NVQs.

Need a card urgently?

If you need a CSCS card to get back on site, you can apply for a Temporary Red CSCS  Experienced Supervsior Card (TSM) once you are oficially registered onto the NVQ. 

You will need have have passed the CITB ‘Specialist’ HS&E test before you can apply for the Red TSM card

Frequently Asked Questions

The Gold CSCS Card is usually valid for 5 years before it needs renewing.

No. You normally need a relevant Level 3 or Level 4 NVQ plus the Specialist HS&E test.

You need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Specialists.

If you have already completed a Level 3 or 4 NVQ, you will only need to pass the CITB HSE Specialist test again to renew the card.

No. CSCS Industry Accreditation cards, often called “grandfather rights” cards, expired on 31 December 2024 and cannot be renewed through that route.

You will need a relevant Level 3 or Level 4 NVQ before applying for a new Gold CSCS Card.

Not sure whether you need Level 3 or Level 4?

The right route depends on your actual site role. If you supervise work in your own trade, Level 3 may be suitable. If you supervise wider site activity, multiple trades or assistant site management duties, Level 4 may be the better route.
