Completing a UK NVQ from an overseas construction or H&S role

International candidates can complete a CADUK NVQ remotely, provided their current overseas construction or health and safety role aligns with the relevant UK National Occupational Standards.

You do not need to be working on a UK site. As long as your daily responsibilities, experience and evidence allow an assessor to confidently judge your competence, the NVQ can be achieved while you are working overseas.

CADUK has already helped professionals qualify while working in countries including the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Cambodia.

Before enrolment, every candidate receives a free suitability check so our assessors can confirm whether the NVQ is appropriate and realistic for your actual role.

How CADUK’s online assessment model works

CADUK specialises in online NVQ assessment for experienced construction professionals. This makes our process ideal for international candidates working overseas.

You simply upload real workplace evidence via the CADUK ePortfolio and complete professional discussions remotely with your assessor. Your assessor then reviews your evidence against the UK National Occupational Standards, identifies any gaps, and discusses your role, decisions, and real on-site examples with you online.

The goal is simple: to recognise and confirm the competence you already demonstrate every day at work, without turning the NVQ into a classroom course.

What makes an overseas role suitable for a UK NVQ?

An overseas construction or health & safety role can be suitable where your current work gives enough evidence to meet the relevant UK NVQ requirements.

Your assessor will look at your job role, level of responsibility, day-to-day duties, project records and the type of evidence you can provide. The key question is whether your work allows you to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and decision-making required by the qualification.

Because CADUK’s assessment is completed remotely in English, your assessor will need to review evidence in English and discuss your role, decisions and examples with you clearly during professional discussion.

The assessment is not based on where your project is located. It is based on whether your role gives you the right opportunities to prove competence against the qualification standards.

To be suitable, you will normally need to show that you are:

UK Qualification Framework Levels

UK NVQs sit within the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which helps explain how vocational qualifications compare across different levels of UK education and training.

For example:

  • Level 6 NVQs sit at a comparable level to a UK Bachelor’s degree
  • Level 7 NVQs sit at a comparable level to a UK Master’s degree

This comparison relates to the level of the qualification within the UK framework. NVQs are vocational, competence-based qualifications, so they are assessed differently from academic degrees. Click the button below to view how UK NVQ levels compare with academic qualification levels on the UK Government’s official framework.

NVQs are vocational qualifications, not academic courses

An NVQ is a competence-based qualification that proves what you can actually do in the workplace, rather than testing academic knowledge.

Many international construction and H&S professionals ask how a UK NVQ is viewed outside the UK. The answer is: very well in most cases, especially in the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and international contracting. Recognition depends on the country, employer, project client, or licensing body.

Many candidates use Ecctis (formerly UK ENIC / NARIC) to obtain an official Statement of Comparability after completion. This helps with job applications, visas, licensing, and professional registration.

We always recommend checking the specific requirements in the country where you plan to use the qualification.

Role & Evidence First

Your location is not the deciding factor. What matters most is whether your current role, responsibilities, and workplace evidence meet the NVQ requirements.

Our assessors focus on what you actually do on site.

Same High Standards

International candidates are assessed against the exact same UK National Occupational Standards as those based in the UK.

Remote assessment does not lower the standard, you still need to provide valid, sufficient evidence of your competence

Simple Online Process

You upload evidence via the CADUK ePortfolio, receive clear feedback from your assessor, and complete professional discussions online.

This practical approach makes the process straightforward and effective for busy professionals working overseas.

Free suitability profiling before enrolment

Every international candidate carries out a detailed suitability check with one of our NVQ assessors before they enrol. This is free and non-committal.

This profiling stage helps confirm whether the NVQ is appropriate, whether the candidate is working at the right level, and whether their overseas role can generate suitable evidence.

An assessor will only approve enrolment where the qualification is achievable and appropriate for the candidate’s actual responsibilities.

What the assessor is checking

How remote international NVQ assessment works

CADUK’s international NVQ assessment model uses the same evidence-based approach as our UK assessment model. The aim is to gather enough valid, authentic and sufficient evidence without creating unnecessary written work for experienced candidates.

Professional discussion

Remote one-to-one discussions where you explain how you carry out your role using real examples from your current work.

Workplace evidence

Documents, records, photos, videos, reports and other evidence from your normal work activities overseas.

Oral questions

Assessor questions used to confirm your knowledge, understanding and decision-making.

Witness testimony

Statements from suitable workplace witnesses who can confirm your competence, responsibilities and role overseas.

Video observation

Short videos showing you carrying out relevant site activities, such as inspections, briefings, quality checks or day-to-day management tasks.

RPL and prior evidence

Relevant existing evidence and prior learning can be considered where it maps to the qualification requirements.

Support for candidates working outside the UK

International candidates need clear guidance because they may be completing a UK qualification from a different country, time zone or construction environment.

CADUK gives every candidate clear guidance materials, a candidate handbook and one-to-one assessor support throughout. Our ePortfolio is designed to keep evidence collection simple, structured and easy to review.

Your assessor will help you understand what evidence is needed, but you still need to upload suitable evidence and respond to feedback promptly.

International NVQ assessment FAQs

Common questions about fast completion, RPL, guided learning hours and how CADUK checks suitability.

International candidates receive the same support period as UK-based candidates. You have up to 12 months to complete your NVQ, although experienced and organised candidates can complete much faster.

Where the role is suitable, evidence is available and the candidate responds quickly to assessor feedback, some NVQs can be completed in as little as 4 weeks.

Yes. Many candidates use higher-level construction NVQs as part of their professional development route, including candidates working outside the UK.

If you are considering CIOB membership, you should check the current CIOB requirements for the membership grade or route you intend to apply for, as these can depend on your qualification, experience and role.

No. A CSCS card is used for access to UK construction sites. To apply for a CSCS card, you will need the correct NVQ and the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

The CITB test must be taken at an approved test centre, so overseas candidates need to be in the UK to complete that step before applying for the card.

Yes. A UK NVQ can help demonstrate your competence to UK construction employers, especially where the qualification matches the role you are applying for.

For site-based roles, many UK construction companies also expect the correct CSCS card. Completing the right NVQ can support your CSCS card route, but you will still need to meet the CSCS requirements, including the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

Your assessor can communicate with you remotely using tools such as Teams, Zoom, email, phone and WhatsApp.

Some countries have restrictions on certain communication apps or platforms, so you and your assessor can agree the most suitable method for your location.

Some countries, employers or authorities may ask for additional verification of your qualification certificate. This is sometimes referred to as attestation, verification or obtaining a formal comparison statement.

In these cases, candidates may use a service such as UK ENIC (formerly UK NARIC) or Ecctis, to help confirm the qualification or provide a formal statement.

This may be relevant if you intend to use the NVQ for employment, licensing, visa or professional recognition purposes overseas.

Yes. CADUK assessment is carried out in English, so your workplace evidence needs to be provided in English and you must be able to discuss your role clearly with your assessor.

This is important because your assessor needs to review your evidence, ask questions and confirm your competence against the NVQ requirements.

No. The NVQ assessment itself can be completed remotely if your role and evidence are suitable. You upload evidence online and complete professional discussions remotely with your assessor
