The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is designed for experienced Health and Safety professionals who manage H&S systems, advise operational teams and take responsibility for safety performance across their organisation.

This qualification recognises your existing skills and provides a formal route to senior professional roles in health and safety. Achievement of this NVQ allows you to apply for the Black (Manager) CSCS Card if you work in construction, and provides a recognised pathway toward Certified IOSH membership (CertIOSH).

The NVQ is completed online through real work evidence. There is no written coursework, no exams and no classroom attendance. You will work with an experienced assessor who guides you through a structured process built around workplace evidence, photos, videos and Zoom-based professional discussions.

Most candidates complete the NVQ within 4–12 weeks depending on their experience and how quickly they provide suitable evidence.

Your assessment is based entirely on your real job. There are no classroom sessions and no written coursework to complete.

You will complete the NVQ through:

• Professional discussions with your assessor via Zoom
• Photos and short videos showing real workplace activities
• Documents such as risk assessments, audits, investigations, method statements, toolbox talks, policies and inspection reports
• Records of meetings, briefings, training, coaching or safety planning
• Evidence of monitoring, reviewing and improving safety performance

Your assessor will guide you step by step and explain exactly how your evidence matches each unit. Everything is flexible and built around your work schedule.

During the professional discussions, your assessor will ask you practical, work-based questions about how you manage health and safety in your role.

Below is a realistic example of the kinds of questions you may be asked.

Assessor: How do you encourage a positive health and safety culture across your organisation or site?
Learner: I lead by example, make sure communication is clear, provide briefings, listen to worker feedback and challenge unsafe behaviour early. I track trends from inspections and near misses and use them to improve engagement and understanding.

Assessor: Talk me through your process when completing a risk assessment. How do you identify hazards, decide who may be affected and select suitable controls?
Learner: I walk the job, consult supervisors, check previous incidents and evaluate who might be affected. I score the risks, prioritise the highest, agree controls with managers and review them when things change.

Assessor: How do you monitor whether health and safety controls are actually working in practice?
Learner: I carry out inspections, review KPIs, check training records, confirm close-out of corrective actions and speak with workers and supervisors to confirm controls are being followed.

Assessor: Talk me through how you investigate an accident or near miss. How do you establish the root causes and ensure actions are completed?
Learner: I gather statements, take photos, review CCTV or access logs, analyse the sequence of events, identify immediate and underlying causes and agree corrective actions. I then follow up and confirm they are closed out.

Assessor: How do you develop or review safe systems of work or method statements?
Learner: I work with supervisors and managers, check legislation and best practice, identify hazards, define controls and make sure the document is clear and workable for the people actually doing the job.

Assessor: How do you make sure workers and contractors understand the safety information they need?
Learner: I deliver briefings, toolbox talks, send updates, simplify technical points and check understanding through questions or follow-ups.

Assessor: How do you review or test emergency procedures, and what do you look for during these checks?
Learner: I check suitability, run drills, confirm roles are clear, ensure equipment is available, record findings and update plans if anything changes.

All evidence comes from your normal Health and Safety work. Nothing is staged or simulated. You use the documents, activities and processes you already follow in your day to day role.

Examples of evidence include:

Photos and Short Videos

These help show your involvement in real workplace activities. Examples include:

  • A brief video of you delivering a toolbox talk

  • A short walkaround explaining site conditions or hazards

  • Footage demonstrating inspections, checks or control measures

These do not need to be perfect videos. Phone clips are ideal.

Site and Organisational Documents

These may include:

  • Risk assessments and method statements

  • Inspection reports and audit findings

  • Accident or near miss investigations

  • Toolbox talk records or briefings

  • Health and Safety action plans

  • Training records or competency checks

  • Workplace monitoring records

  • Emergency procedures or drill findings

  • Contractor evaluations or induction records

  • Any correspondence showing your involvement in H&S decisions

Your assessor will tell you which documents are most suitable and will only ask for evidence that you genuinely have.

Witness Testimony

A manager or senior colleague may complete a simple Witness Testimony form confirming:

  • Your job role

  • Your responsibilities

  • Your involvement in Health and Safety

  • That the evidence you have provided reflects your real work

Your assessor may contact them briefly to verify the information.

Your assessor will support you throughout and keep the evidence process simple and achievable.

Most candidates complete within 4 to 12 weeks depending on how quickly they can provide evidence and arrange their discussion calls.

You are given 12 months to finish the NVQ if you need more time.

When you click the red “Book Your NVQ Now” button you will be taken to a short online profiling form. This form gives an overview of the NVQ units and provides simple examples of the type of evidence you may need.

Once you submit the form an assessor will call you to confirm that the NVQ is achievable for you based on your job role, experience and the evidence you have available. This helps ensure you are on the correct qualification before you start.

If you are approved, we will send you an invoice. The profiling process is completely non committal. If you do not wish to continue you can simply ignore the invoice. If you choose to go ahead you can make payment and start your NVQ the same day

Your assessor asks practical questions about your real work, based on the evidence you provide. You simply talk through how you manage health and safety in your normal job.

Here are two examples:

Assessor: How do you identify hazards on your site and make sure they’re controlled?

Assessor: How do you investigate accidents or near misses?
Learner: I secure the area, take statements, gather evidence and identify the root cause. I update the accident log, agree corrective actions and monitor them until they’re closed out.

You’ll use evidence from your day-to-day work such as:

• Photos and brief videos
• RAMS, permits and inspection reports
• Accident, incident and near-miss investigations
• Training records or induction materials
• Toolbox talks and briefing notes
• Audit reports or compliance checklists
