To apply for the Black CSCS Manager Card, you normally need a relevant Level 6 or Level 7 NVQ that matches the management or senior technical role you carry out in construction.
The right NVQ depends on what you actually manage day to day. A site manager running live site operations will usually need a different qualification from a contracts manager, quantity surveyor, planner, clerk of works or senior health and safety professional.
This guide explains the main NVQ routes that can support a Black CSCS Card application, including who each qualification is designed for and which CADUK NVQ page to use when you are ready to apply.
The Black CSCS Manager Card is for experienced construction professionals in management or senior technical roles. The qualification needs to prove that your competence matches the level of responsibility you hold on construction projects.
For most construction management roles, this means completing a relevant Level 6 or Level 7 NVQ. Once you have completed the NVQ, you will also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Managers and Professionals before applying for the Black CSCS Card.
CADUK’s construction management NVQs are completed remotely using real evidence from the work you already manage, supported by professional discussions with your assessor. There are no classroom sessions, written assignments or exams.
This is one of the most common NVQ routes for people who manage the day-to-day running of live construction sites.
Typical roles: Site Manager, Senior Site Manager, Assistant Site Manager, Construction Manager, Section Manager.
Best fit: people who plan, organise and monitor site work, coordinate labour and subcontractors, manage health and safety, check quality, monitor progress and help bring projects through to completion.
Evidence examples: site programmes, RAMS, progress meeting minutes, quality records, inspection reports, site photos, site videos, handover records and communication with the site team.

Typical roles: Contracts Manager, Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Estimator, Planner, Buyer, Procurement Manager, Commercial Manager or Director managing work across projects.
Best fit: people who coordinate resources, manage commercial performance, deal with planning, procurement, supply chain activity or operational delivery across one or more construction projects.
Evidence examples: procurement records, cost reports, project programmes, subcontractor records, contract documentation, operational planning records and supply chain communications.

This route is for construction professionals whose role is focused on inspecting work, monitoring quality and checking that construction activity meets drawings, specifications and required standards.
Typical roles: Clerk of Works, Senior Clerk of Works, Building Inspector, Quality Inspector or Construction Quality Manager.
Best fit: people who independently inspect construction work, record findings, identify defects, monitor remedial action and report on quality or compliance issues.
Evidence examples: inspection reports, snagging lists, defect records, quality records, site photographs, compliance records and communication with contractors or project teams.

The Level 7 Construction Senior Management NVQ is for senior leaders who are responsible for wider project, commercial, operational or organisational performance.
Typical roles: Senior Project Manager, Contracts Manager, Operations Manager, Operations Director, Commercial Director, Construction Director, Managing Director or Programme Manager.
Best fit: people who make senior decisions, manage strategic risks, lead teams or departments, control programmes of work, oversee commercial performance and influence wider business or project outcomes.

CADUK’s NVQs are assessed remotely. You build a portfolio using evidence from your normal role, such as project documents, photographs, videos, meeting records, reports and communication records.
Your assessor reviews the evidence and completes professional discussions with you over Zoom. These discussions allow you to explain your responsibilities, decisions and examples from real projects without having to complete written assignments.
The simplest way to choose is to look at what your job is mainly responsible for:
If you are unsure, you can apply for the route that seems closest to your role and CADUK will complete a free assessor profiling call before enrolment. If another NVQ is more suitable, we will point you in the right direction before you commit.
